Welcome! (Details)

Hello, and welcome to my Senior English ePortfolio. This ePortfolio serves as an electronic collection of my course work, writing development, and personal projects as an English and Education major here at Lewis University. Please take a look at my page for some background information on who I am, my career goals as a secondary English teacher at Mariner High School, and some pieces of my work. Thank you.

About me

My name is Ryan Arciero, a graduate of Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. I have majored in English on the Track 2 program for Language and Literature. With my English degree and background in Education, I felt well equipped to tackle the job market, and am currently working as an English teacher at Mariner High School. I believe that my excellent instruction at Lewis and the privilege of taking both English and Education coursework will serve me well in my future endeavors.

As a student at Lewis, I actively participated in several clubs, organizations, and extracurricular activities to help expand my sense of service and learning horizons. I served as a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the National English Honor Society, for three years, acting as co-president my senior year. I also was involved as a member of Teachers of Tomorrow my entire Lewis career and Delta Epsilon Sigma, the National Catholic Honor Society. The summer before my senior year I was also blessed to visit Spain for three weeks as part of a Study Abroad program. It was an incredibly enjoyable, valuable, and culturally eye-opening experience I will never forget.

In light of my college experience at Lewis University, I look forward to making the most of Florida and succeeding as an effective educator in the classroom. It is my goal to become the greatest English teacher I can be, and truly leave a mark on every single one of my students. I believe that my love of literature, the teaching strategies I learned in my Education courses, and my interest in seeing students have fun and succeed in my classroom will enable me to continue pursuing my dreams as a new chapter in my life begins.

Hello, readers!

Thank you for taking the time to visit my English ePortfolio. I believe that my collection of written works will serve me well as as an English teacher, including my current position at Mariner High School. My time at Lewis University went by extremely quickly, but I feel the friendships I made, the knowledge I gained, and the literary skills I learned will stay with me for the rest of my life. I hope to use this ePortfolio to demonstrate how my writing skills have grown and improved over the course of my time in college, and the direction I wish for my writing to take me as I move forward.

While I have wanted to pursue a career teaching English since I was a young boy — from helping my younger sister learn how to read to spending countless nights staying up late with a flashlight and my favorite book — I am now at the point in my life where I am coming closer to that professional dream. The “My Pages” section of this ePortfolio showcases several of my pieces that have helped shape the writing on my journey to become an English teacher and chronicled my development as a Literature and Education student over the past four years.

  • A College Writing II essay that samples one of my first formal term papers in college as a film review and represents my early work
  • A textual analysis essay from my Introduction to English Studies course that showcases my first experience applying a critical literary lens — a New Critical approach to a poem — and also represents early work in the major
  • A creative nonfiction essay from Advanced Writing, presented as a case study that demonstrates my development as a writer in regards to extensive revision and improvement
  • A textual analysis essay from British Literature I that showcases my ability to apply a unique focus on a classic work from a feminist lens, along with a thread of connection to an outside text
  • A literary autobiography completed in my Teaching Writing class that represents my ability to deeply reflect on my own writing growth and the groundwork for my interest in pursuing a career in English and Education
  • A novel study unit plan from Special Methods of English — a Secondary Education course — that demonstrates my ability to create effective and engaging lesson plans for a novel, organize a teaching schedule over the course of several weeks, and take advantage of my Education experience as a future professor
  • A final capstone essay from Literary Theory and Criticism that represents my ability to conduct primary research and apply Reader-Response theory to a classic short story in a modern context
  • A Summative Reflection page that displays a reflective paper in which I look back on my personal journey as a writer over the course of my four years at Lewis University, and how my skills have progressed in that time to prepare me for graduate school
  • A Writing Showcase of two texts that represents my interest and ability to write outside of the classroom both professionally and personally, as well as through publication venues

As I forge on to the next stage in my life, continuing as a secondary level English teacher, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who made my graduation and this ePortfolio possible. I have had incredibly positive and rewarding learning experiences here at Lewis University from many excellent teachers in both departments. From making me laugh and learn to making me smile and think, I will always be grateful for their insight and support of me throughout my time here. Thank you all very much for your support as I step out into the “real world.” I truly believe that all I have learned here will lend itself well to pursuing my goals beyond Lewis and in my classroom.
